GeoFocus LLC Installs Tracking and Information System for UTA TRAX System

When the 2002 Winter Olympic Games begin February 8, thousands of visitors traveling on trains throughout Salt Lake City will benefit from information relayed through GeoFocus’ GPS tracking system.

GeoFocus LLC announced that it completed installation of its rail vehicle tracking and automated passenger information system technology for the Salt Lake City TRAX light rail system in time for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Technology provided by GeoFocus provides a customer friendly experience as over one million spectators, athletes and media are expected to ride the rails to Olympic events.

TRAX is operated by the Utah Transit Authority and is a major transportation component for public travel to many Winter Games sporting venues. The GeoFocus system, which includes its rail tracking software, TrainTrac, provides technology that includes tracking of trains and audio and text messaging to each of TRAX’s 20 stations that notify passengers when the next train will arrive. The system design takes advantage of existing GPS tracking hardware and radio system components previously designed and built by UTA.

It’s groundbreaking to use technology to do something like this. Really the idea is to provide our customers with confidence in our service, said Richard Hodges, UTA’s Intelligent Transportation Systems manager. Our focus is on turning the data into information, interpreting it and using the tools we have to make it valuable.

GeoFocus worked closely with TRAX to design a rail vehicle information management system that allows TRAX system personnel to efficiently monitor and control train operations. Major system components include:

GeoFocus 2-2-2-

* GPS based monitoring of train movements and locations;

* Measurement of performance against schedules;

* Automated, ADA compliant, station platform audio announcements and visual sign control of train arrival messages;

* Custom creation and control of station messages;

* Automated generation of operations reports for schedule performance;

* Rapid Safety and Security messages to stations;

* Fully distributed client-server application for UTA wide computer network monitoring of tracking system;

* Sharing of train performance information for UTA Bus Connection Protection system to ensure TRAX riders will have fully coordinated bus and train operations.

All of us at GeoFocus are excited to be the technology of choice for the light rail service during the Olympics, said Jolene M. Molitoris, president and CEO, GeoFocus LLC. Our tracking and messaging system will be an asset for the 70,000 expected daily visitors to Salt Lake City and for UTA’s customers after the games.
