Global Positioning System End-of-Week Rollover
The GPS EOW Rollover is a scheduled event that takes place every 20 years
of GPS operation. The first EOW Rollover will take place at midnight on the
evening of August 21. While not a Year 2000 problem,
the rollover is analogous to a common manifestation of the Year 2000
problem.
Originally designed for military purposes, GPS systems are used in a
variety of non-military applications for navigation, surveying, logistics,
scientific research, and precision time determination for such applications
as telecommunication networks and remote Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition systems. GPS devices are used in various departments,
labs, and centers at MIT.
